Integrated Design Thinking
Ultimately, we design places for people: the people working or living within a built environment, those who engage visually and physically, such a passers-by, neighbors, or visitors; cities within which a building or environment itself functions as a member of the community; and importantly, for our clients, to support their aspirations and realize their dreams. At a city scale, we strive to create buildings and places that are artful yet purposeful, that respond to context whether that is to fit in seamlessly or even to stand in great contrast to what has come before. We take care to integrate our design so that connections work and the practicalities of infrastructure and transit are addressed. The logic of interior environments is derived from how people interact, how they need to interact in their work, and from the practicalities of a specific client鈥檚 business. We know from the data we have collected in our work as workplace strategists that physical work environments can create the optimal setting for collaboration, employee engagement, wellness, recruiting and retention – all of which are measurable connections between design and business performance.
Golden 1 Center: The most sustainable arena in the world
Venues for sports and entertainment are among the most exciting projects to design. Fans, clients, cities, and designers come together to create something unique and inspiring.To meet the challenge, our architects, sports architects, landscape architects, engineers, urban planners and economists worked together from the beginning to design a basketball arena and entertainment venue that sets the standard and spurs downtown revitalization.
Tongzhou Transit Hub: Creating a Civic Place
It’s no small challenge to design one of the largest transit facilities in the world, and our designers have created an elegant complex providing 500,000 m2 for the outskirts of Beijing, China. The station is designed based on five central principles: clarity of circulation, ease of transfer, sustainability, iconic structure within the new city, and constructability. The multi-modal facility will connect 24 high speed regional rail lines to local subway, bus and ferry service. A major retail center will also be featured. Our scheme was chosen as a competition finalist.
